August 31, 2014 In Mount Isa.

Had not posted any of the pictures of  Hughenden.  From  Hughenden  to Winton where we stayed overnight. The water here ciomes from a very deep well so miles away and is hot when it comes out and has to be cooled. It smell like rotten eggs and tastes about the same , was told if you drink it very cold it is good, but brushing your teeth was bad enough.

Winton is on the dinosaur trail and opal is also found here.

Then on to Longreach the gateway to the outback. Qantas Founders Museum and to have a look around. Very interesting history.  Stayed overnight at a very nice park.

Leaving Longreach we went to the Lily Lagoon a water hole which is feed by the Thomson River system, where we saw some pelicans.  Travelling back through Winton and on to McKinley she we stayed over night and had an enjoyable evening talking to a couple of firefighters from Hughenden who were on their way to Birdsville.  This is the pub for the movie Crocodile Dundee.

In the morning it was off after breakfast to Mount Isa with a short stop in Cloncurry.
Still very dry and there will probably not be any rain until the end of November now.

Tuesday and Wednesday August 26/27 2014.

Leaving Charters Towers heading for Hughenden, the country is very dry only the occasional flowering tree nothing else. along the way we made stops at Pentland and Prairie for coffee and to. Chat to the local people.
Just past Prairie we stopped at White Mountain National park to have a look at the rigged terrain and gorge system, This is the Great Dividing Range at 550m.
Then on to Hughenden and staying overnight.  Was talking to a gentleman this evening and he suggested that we go out to the Porcupine Gorge that is 60Km out of town.
Wednesday up early and leave for Porcupine and arrive at 10 Am for a 1.2 Km walk down into the gorge and then walk about  to see the sites and how the sandstone has been worn away over the years, then the 1.2Km walk back up from the gorge floor.
After lunch it was back to another part of the gorge for some sight seeing.
Back to Hughenden and because it was now three in the afternoon will stay again to night and leave early tomorrow for Winton.

August 25, 2014

Yesterday we traveled from Airlie Beach to just south of Townsville by about 20 km. staying at the bush Oasis Camper van park, which is across from the Billabong Sanctuary, a small animal park that was hit quite hard by a cyclone about two years ago and is just now starting to get going again.
the park is quite interesting and so took several hours looking around befor going to the camper park for the night .
Today I drove to Charters Towers about 90 minutes south west of Townsville, a old gold min town, Gold,Greed,Ghosts and Grandeur.  second largest city on Queensland in 1880,s
the city has maintained it old buildings and is very interesting to just walk around which we did.

Tonight we will stay here and in the morning are off to Hughenden in search of he dinosaur trail.
